Our client is a global education technology company that provides digital learning platforms, courseware, and academic content used by millions of learners across 165+ countries. Its large-scale AWS ecosystem supports multiple independent products and business domains. As the organization continued to scale, cloud costs increased while infrastructure became harder to manage.
Based on our long-term collaboration with the company, NIX identified opportunities to address these issues, improving cloud cost efficiency and infrastructure visibility. Together with the client, we defined a focused optimization initiative starting with a pilot product to validate the proposed approach before scaling it across the broader cloud landscape.
Our goal for this project was to optimize one of the client’s products as a starting point for a larger transformation. Key objectives included:
Conducting a comprehensive AWS Well-Architected Review (WAR)
Performing a cloud cost audit to find cost-saving opportunities
Optimizing resource utilization and infrastructure configuration
Improving cost transparency and governance
Aligning the environment with AWS best practices and cloud-native principles
Establishing a foundation for scaling optimizations across other products
The environment had grown organically, resulting in fragmented resource management and limited cost visibility. Multiple environments coexisted within the same accounts, with inconsistent configurations and no clear separation. At the same time, unused resources and overprovisioned infrastructure were driving unnecessary costs.
The main challenge was to introduce meaningful cloud infrastructure optimization quickly and smoothly, without major architectural changes or disrupting ongoing operations.
NIX approached the initiative as a structured optimization effort, combining WAR practices with hands-on cloud engineering improvements. The focus was on delivering immediate cost savings while improving long-term efficiency and manageability.
Our team began with a detailed analysis of the AWS environment to understand how resources were used and where costs were incurred. Through the AWS Well-Architected Framework, we performed cloud cost audit and evaluated infrastructure, workloads, and operational processes.
This gave a clear view of inefficiencies—idle resources, overprovisioning, and lack of cost tracking—and helped us prioritize actions with the highest impact.
A significant portion of cloud spend came from resources that were no longer needed or were oversized for the actual workload. To reduce unnecessary costs and improve infrastructure efficiency, NIX focused on cleanup and resource optimization.

NIX helped the client significantly reduce cloud spending while improving infrastructure efficiency, visibility, and manageability across the AWS environment. By eliminating unused resources, AWS rightsizing workloads, and optimizing storage and lower environments, the company achieved measurable cost savings without disrupting daily operations.
At the same time, better tagging, governance, and cost allocation practices provided greater transparency and control over cloud consumption. Following the successful pilot, the client approved extending the initiative to additional products, creating a foundation for scaling optimization efforts across the broader cloud ecosystem.
