Our client, a maturing startup specializing in cybersecurity and data awareness, had successfully scaled their business of providing extensive data governance services. However, their existing system lacked the capacity to manage the increasing volume of raw data, resulting in significant underperformance and, consequently, revenue loss for their major customers.

In a search for a solution, the client engaged NIX to leverage our proven expertise in large-scale data management and cloud computing. Our initial engagement began with a comprehensive AWS Well-Architected Review (WAR) of their existing infrastructure to stabilize and optimize their data operations and pipelines.

Challenge

During the thorough AWS security assessment and data pipeline optimization of the client’s system, our team faced two concurrent challenges that had to be addressed to ensure long-term solution sustainability:

  • Maintain operational simplicity without introducing architectural complexity that would burden the client’s internal development team or increase their operational overhead.
  • Maintain a cost-efficient balance for monitoring and logging across the platform, ensuring optimized observability costs.

Solution

As an official AWS Well-Architected partner, the NIX team conducted an in-depth WAR evaluation across the six pillars of Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Cost Optimization, Sustainability, and Performance Efficiency. This systematic review included a deep analysis of the data pipelines and database bottlenecks to implement critical architectural improvements and guarantee a stable, secure data flow. As a result, we identified areas for significant improvement in CI/CD pipelines and cybersecurity.

Based on the critical findings, our team immediately prioritized production fixes and ecosystem enhancement within the AWS infrastructure:

  • Implemented precisely assigned permissions, security groups, IAM roles, and robust encryption protocols

 

  • Integrated consistent resource tagging and naming conventions, along with targeted virtual private cloud (VPC) improvements

 

  • Enabled comprehensive global logging and auditing, configured Security Hub, and hardened CI/CD pipelines

 

  • Defined and applied a robust multi-account strategy by setting up dedicated environments separated across distinct AWS accounts

Simultaneously, our data pipeline experts focused on achieving peak performance and reliability:

  • Conducted a detailed performance analysis report, identifying primary database wait events and processing bottlenecks

 

  • Executed performance tuning through advanced indexing strategies, query refactoring, and configuration adjustments

 

  • Developed a robust end-to-end extract, transform, load (ETL) pipeline ready for future expansion and scaling

 

  • Created a complete data build tool (DBT) project utilizing SQL models for complex data transformation tasks

 

  • Provided a summary report detailing the final architecture, achieved data latency metrics, and performance benchmarks, serving as the blueprint for migrating all remaining reports

Our team proactively extended beyond the initial WAR scope, proposing strategic enhancements for long-term product performance. For instance, we recommended the client migrate from their existing OpenAI stack to the AWS-native Bedrock AI service, significantly enhancing solution security and improving seamless integration with other native AWS services.

Through the in-depth Well-Architected Review, cloud security assessment, and subsequent systematic improvements, the client received a significantly elevated product that boosted their business. Enhanced product reliability, refactored CI/CD pipelines, and secured sensitive data storage enabled the company to fill the gaps in its infrastructure and deliver exceptional data governance services to its customers
