Our client, a US-based company, operates a platform dedicated to children’s audio stories, designed to entertain and support cognitive development for kids aged 3–9. The goal is to foster a close-knit community and promote a more thoughtful digital space for young listeners.

Initially, the company had a website and iOS and Android apps offering story purchases, subscriptions, and free sample content. However, the system lacked the necessary performance and functionality to remain competitive, especially given the growing user base. To address this, the client partnered with NIX for a full technical upgrade, leveraging our vast software engineering expertise, clear communication, and goal-oriented execution.

Our team had to analyze the system’s existing infrastructure, identify and eliminate potential bottlenecks, and ensure that both web and mobile solutions fully met market demands and customer expectations.

Project Scope

The original website featured a basic interface with a collection of children’s stories that users could browse by category and age, while the apps offered even fewer capabilities. Our task was to revamp both solutions with a comprehensive upgrade that would enhance user experience, optimize performance, and introduce new features across the web platform and mobile applications.

To give the company a competitive edge, we reimagined its digital presence from the ground up. The platform needed to be more than just functional—it had to captivate young listeners while providing a seamless experience for parents and administrators alike. We approached the transformation holistically, ensuring that every aspect of the system—from design to performance—was aligned with the needs of its audience. The result was a modern, engaging, and scalable platform that redefined how users interact with content.

Core Updates:

  • Comprehensive system overhaul: Backed by a thorough analysis of the existing infrastructure, we refactored the legacy code and fully revamped the back end (Ruby on Rails) and front end (React.js with Gatsby) to achieve better stability, high performance, and smooth system operation.
  • Three-party integrations: To streamline business processes, our team integrated the system with the necessary services and tools, including Stripe for payment solutions, Contentful for content management, Mailchimp for email marketing, OneSignal for app notifications, and others.
  • UI/UX enhancements: NIX experts redesigned the website and mobile apps to focus on young listeners, ensuring an engaging and age-appropriate experience. We introduced vibrant visuals and playful animations, making navigation effortless for both children and their parents and maintaining brand consistency.

Website

We significantly enhanced the website’s functionality, starting with a complete redesign of the audio player to ensure a smooth experience aligned with the platform’s corporate identity. Our team expanded the player’s capabilities and improved its back-end logic, optimizing the audio streaming process for stability and faster loading times. 

Additionally, we upgraded the user interface to streamline navigation and make it more intuitive and visually appealing. To this end, but not limited to, we incorporated animated story characters, further enriching the listening experience.

Mobile Applications

We transformed the iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) applications using native technologies and ensuring each was fully optimized for its respective platform. Both solutions mirror the website’s key features while offering a seamless mobile-first experience.

The upgraded apps also introduced offline mode, allowing users to enjoy stories without an internet connection, along with smart push notifications for updates, new releases, and personalized recommendations. Additionally, cross-device synchronization ensures that user preferences and progress are preserved across both web and mobile devices, creating a fluid, interconnected experience.

Admin Panel Enhancements

We upgraded the admin panel to give the client better control over content, subscriptions, and analytics. Admins can now assign free stories with an automatic banner display, easily manage subscriptions, and more, all for a more efficient workflow.
