Business Overview

Our client is a well-being company that provides cloud-based solutions for behavioral health and human services companies worldwide. However, their two core product offerings were built on an outdated technology stack, entailed bottlenecks, and struggled to meet evolving customer demands in the current digital environment.

To address these needs, strengthen the apps, and migrate solutions to a more advanced tech stack, the client engaged NIX, recognizing our deep expertise in cloud-driven applications and experience with the sensitive healthcare domain. Seamlessly integrated with the client’s in-house team, our experts focused on comprehensive refactoring and maintaining the existing parts of the software.

Challenge

The legacy architecture of both products restricted the client’s business growth and entailed operational overhead due to prolonged maintenance cycles. Additionally, we had to proactively address continuous rollovers in task estimations, bottlenecks, unfinished sprints, and underestimated workloads.

Solution

To address legacy software issues, our team conducted a partial refactoring process of the applications while maintaining the core functionality and ensuring their seamless and uninterrupted performance. To optimize the workloads and task estimations, we proposed and implemented a revised task estimation strategy, which improved sprint completion. Our team also successfully migrated the company’s live history report—a vital tool that provides key statistics and personnel statuses—to the new stack.

Electronic Health Record Platform Refactoring

The cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) platform collects and manages patient and population health records for behavioral health companies. This platform handles documentation, billing, scheduling, payers, programs, services, caseload management, and medication administration for behavioral health facilities. This cross-platform solution required three distinct teams for three different tasks: managing and maintaining its existing functionalities, implementing performance improvements, and redesigning the user interface.

We utilized industry best practices and proactively suggested enhancements for this large-scale software, taking this project far beyond mere task performance. Our team customized the software version for every customer to precisely match their unique operational needs. Additionally, we modernized the underlying code, specifically addressing inefficient hard-coded data that led to performance slowdown.

Key capabilities of the platform include:

  • Mobile EHR, offering intuitive documentation and scheduling features, accessible both online and offline.

  • Patient Portal, providing a hub for seamless communication between patients and doctors.

  • Telehealth and messaging, facilitating HIPAA-compliant video conferencing.

  • Internal chat, enabling efficient communication within healthcare organizations.

  • Third-party integrations, allowing for customization and integration with customers’ existing workflows.

Human Resources Management Platform Enhancements

The human resources (HR) management and payroll system seamlessly connects employees and departments within organizations across various sectors. The system covers position control, time and attendance, payroll processing, benefits, talent and recruiting management, and business intelligence (BI) with HR management.

The application originally consisted of two modules: a mobile version, on NODE.js and Angular, and web legacy software. While our priority was to maintain a live product, enhance its performance, and fix vulnerabilities, we also focused on implementing new functionalities. The second task for our team was a step-by-step migration of the whole system to a more advanced and modern technological stack, consisting of microservices and AWS Lambda functions to improve scalability, reduce operational overhead, and ensure high agility for further development.

    The timesheets feature facilitates meticulous tracking of working hours, sick leaves, and holidays.

    Tailored Benefits Administration

    The benefits module allows customization and management of employee benefits, including retirement plans and medical insurance.

    Flexible Payroll Processing

    The payroll feature consolidates all essential data, including working hours, retirements, and benefits, and generates customized payrolls. The feature’s adaptability allows companies to seamlessly adjust payrolls according to their specific accounting and financial requirements.

Outcome

Our contribution to the project resulted in substantial improvements in the performance and security of both platforms. These critical enhancements directly translate into tangible business growth, evidenced by a marked increase in new proposals for the client. As a result of our commitment to seamlessly delivering solutions, the client decided to extend our partnership to further enhance the functionalities of both platforms and drive market expansion.
