Business Overview

Our client is a leading healthcare company that provides patient access solutions and support to various clients and pharmaceutical organizations. They decided to develop a Master Data Management (MDM) system to centralize and unify the management of entities across internal services using AI solutions, Claude Code in particular. Their ultimate goal was to establish a single, consistent way to manage data and provide stable APIs that they could use to integrate their services.

As a result of the vibe coding, the client built an advanced PoC. It consisted of a functional user interface, a database layer, basic authentication with role-based access control (RBAC), and an established DevOps infrastructure with CI/CD pipelines across development, UAT, and production environments. However, the prototype still required significant engineering improvements and vibe code cleanup before it could be launched into production.

Since NIX United continually collaborates with the client, we joined the project to address the technical issues and establish a solid architectural foundation for future development of the solution.

Project Scope

Due to the vibe-code nature, the product required significant testing and enhancements. Thus, we focused mostly on auditing and improving the existing AI-generated code rather than rebuilding the application from scratch. Our key objectives included:

    • Assessing the existing architecture, code organization, and infrastructure
  1.

    • Identifying security gaps and strengthening role-based access control
  2.

    • Fixing broken business logic and improving application stability
  3.

    • Optimizing database queries and performance
  4.

    • Introducing a more structured architecture to simplify maintenance and future development
  5.

    • Implementing event-driven communication for the modules being integrated

Challenge

Although the client’s PoC demonstrated the concept and included extensive functionality, its codebase contained duplication, dead code, tightly coupled components, and broken business logic. Some features appeared complete in the interface but did not work as intended, while others could cause unexpected application crashes. Before moving forward with the planned integration, we had to assess the existing implementation more thoroughly and address the following issues:

  • 1

The code lacked clear separation into layers and functional slices, making changes difficult to implement without affecting other parts of the application

  • 2

Broken logic and tightly interconnected components made the system fragile

  • 3

Frontend and backend permissions were not consistently aligned, creating gaps in access control

  • 4

Inefficient queries slowed down data operations

  • 5

The lack of architectural separation made individual components difficult to test reliably, while insufficient test coverage increased the risk of regressions

Solution

Our team conducted a comprehensive vibe-code audit to identify technical debt, architectural weaknesses, and security and testing gaps that needed to be addressed before the MDM system could evolve reliably. We used these findings to guide targeted refactoring and feature development, accelerating the process with Claude Code and Microsoft Copilot while preserving the original technology stack and deployment infrastructure. The work followed an iterative cycle of implementation, stakeholder feedback, and refinement, with a focus on improving the parts of the application required for the planned integration.

  • 01

    Restructuring the Architecture

Our first step in the vibe code cleanup was to establish a more consistent and reliable application architecture. Since the original codebase was overwhelmed with duplication, tight coupling, and difficulties maintaining existing functionality, we reorganized the code into well-defined layers and functional slices, improving separation of concerns and making individual components easier to understand and maintain. We also addressed duplicated and dead code where relevant and repaired the logic behind malfunctioning features. These changes established a clearer structure for the integrated modules and created an architectural baseline the client can use to improve the remaining application.

  • 02

Fixing Business Logic and Improving Stability

Next, our experts reviewed and corrected the logic affecting the planned integration, resolving issues that could cause crashes or prevent features from working correctly. We also implemented missing features required to connect the client’s core project with the MDM system. Because some of the affected code was shared across the application, these improvements also benefited other areas that depended on the same components.

  • 03

    Enhancing Access Control

Our audit revealed inconsistencies between frontend and backend role-based access control that we needed to address. While the interface reflected user permissions, backend authorization did not consistently enforce the same rules, creating a potential security gap. We fixed it by aligning the frontend and backend permission models and strengthening backend role validation to ensure that access restrictions were enforced consistently. This helped to establish a reliable access-control foundation for the app.

  • 04

    Optimizing Database Queries

The existing code structure and query patterns made data operations less efficient and caused performance issues. We reviewed and optimized the queries used by the affected modules, improving data access and reducing unnecessary processing. These changes helped the integrated functionality operate more efficiently while supporting a more maintainable approach to database interactions.

  • 05

    Introducing Robust Event-driven Communication

To build a dependable way for system components to communicate without becoming tightly coupled, we introduced Apache Kafka. This event-streaming platform provided a more structured approach to exchanging events and supported the integration requirements without adding further direct dependencies between components. While the existing tech stack remained in place, Apache Kafka only extended it with a messaging capability needed for the new functionality and future integration scenarios.

  • 06

    Testing and Establishing Engineering Standards

We improved code separation and expanded unit and integration testing for the refactored modules. Our QA specialists tested the updated functionality and developed testing strategies to support reliable validation as the application evolves. We also added monitoring and documentation to simplify maintenance and provide a blueprint for improving the rest of the application. By preserving the existing CI/CD pipelines and Dev, UAT, and production environments, we focused on addressing the key engineering gaps.

Outcome

As a result of our vibe code audit and cleanup services, NIX United successfully turned a vibe-coded PoC into a full-fledged, maintainable solution ready for continued development and real-world use. We preserved its core functionality and technology stack while restructuring the architecture, fixing broken logic, strengthening access control, optimizing database queries, and improving testing.

As the system is currently used internally and is expected to handle low data volumes at first, the immediate priority was to ensure that the integrated functionality worked reliably without compromising the connected services. A dedicated team has since been formed to continue improving the platform, with NIX United contributing to its ongoing development.
