Business Overview

Our client is a US-based wireless technology company specializing in integrated sensor alert systems—an Internet of Things (IoT) solution enabling real-time emergency response. Their core offering includes mobile panic buttons used in large facilities like hotels, schools, hospitals, manufacturing facilities and other properties. These devices communicate with beacons to determine location: when triggered, the button detects nearby beacons and transmits their MAC addresses and metadata to the server for precise tracking.

The company also assists organizations with planning and physical installation of beacon networks. Previously, deployment data was recorded manually on paper maps—a slow and error-prone process. To simplify, automate, and accelerate beacon and panic button deployment, the client partnered with NIX to build web and mobile applications, recognizing our broad expertise in cross-industry software development. These digital tools needed to enable real-time data updates, streamlined workflows, and more accurate, scalable coordination of beacon installations.

Project Scope

The client originally envisioned simple applications for virtual beacon placement and basic device assignment. However, during our initial consultations, we uncovered broader challenges and opportunities, such as the need for map interaction in the field, improved role-based access, and on-site signal validation.

As a result, the work scope expanded to ensure that both platforms support more advanced features and richer automation.

Challenge

Our team needed to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software components. This required precise real-world beacon testing to validate performance, minimize risks, and guarantee system reliability.

Solution

To support IoT-based beacon deployment and management, we developed two digital tools:

  • A web application for planning and managing beacon placement on floor maps
  • A native Android application optimized for field deployment and real-time operations

Each app was designed to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software, simplify site setup, and empower end-user technical staff. To address this, we simulated real-world use through the mobile app’s built-in Bluetooth signal checker and QR-to-map syncing. These tools allowed on-site teams to validate beacon signals and confirm accurate hardware-software alignment during installation, ensuring that both applications were working as intended.

Web Application

To digitalize and streamline the process of beacon installation and management, NIX developed a web application that became the central platform for planning and managing beacon deployments across facilities. This system enables virtual beacon placement, assignment, and monitoring on uploaded SVG floor maps—with pixel-level precision.

The web solution offers a responsive, role-based experience and supports scalable access for administrators, organizational users, and technical staff.

Key Features

  • Dashboard: View organization-specific data and access key functions
  • Organization Management: Manage organizations, access levels, and user roles
  • User Management: Add, edit, and delete users and link them to organizations
  • Building and Floor Management: Create and manage buildings and floor structures
  • SVG Map Management: Upload and adjust SVG floor maps with placement markers
  • Fixed Location Management: Define beacon installation points via templates or manual entry
  • Label and QR Code Creation: Create printable QR codes with location metadata
  • Label Printing: Generate physical labels using predefined templates
  • Device Assignment: Assign beacons to fixed locations via scanning QR codes or manual input
  • Trigger Monitoring: View activated panic button data and corresponding beacon response

Mobile Application

To make the product more accessible and field-ready, NIX developed a native Android app that supports real-time beacon installation directly on-site. This app empowers on-site teams to work independently with accurate data and rapid feedback, significantly reducing reliance on central coordination. It mirrors most of the web platform’s functionality and introduces unique mobile features tailored for field operations.

Built with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, the app provides a clean, efficient UI experience on smartphones and tablets.

Additional Mobile-only Features:

  • Map and Table Mode: View, zoom, and scroll through floor maps or access location data in a tabular format
  • Scan QR Code: Assign beacons using the device’s camera with low-light support
  • Swap Beacon: Replace an assigned beacon with a new one on-site
  • Check Bluetooth Signal: Detect BLE signals for real-time beacon validation
  • QR-to-Map Syncing: Scan QR codes with MAC addresses and link beacons to predefined map locations
  • Site Monitoring: View real-time emergency and maintenance alerts

Outcome

NIX delivered a fully integrated digital solution that significantly upgraded the client’s IoT system, removing outdated manual workflows.

The applications helped the client:

  • Streamline beacon and panic button deployments
  • Automate data capture and validation
  • Ensure real-time synchronization between devices and systems
  • Reduce setup time and improve overall operational efficiency

With centralized planning and mobile execution tools, the client can now scale deployments faster and assign tasks to local technical staff—without sacrificing accuracy.

Cooperation with NIX continues. Future enhancements include integrating Google Maps for advanced floor accuracy and developing an iOS version of the mobile app.
