The purpose of this article is to present this year’s average iOS developer salaries in the US and worldwide. We will also discuss if the Swift and Objective-C programming languages are still in demand in 2020, and determine if the highest-paid regions offer the best experts.
According to major job portals, the average iOS app developer salary starts at $87,000 and finishes at $126,000. It’s difficult to know which job portal is more accurate, so we decided to present all the results to compare.
The smallest average salary was found on Payscale at $87,332 per year. The second trustworthy resource is Glassdoor. Based on its data, iOS developers in the US earn $96,016 per year. According to ZipRecruiter, the average iOS developer salary in the US in 2020 is $114,614 per year. This calculates to approximately $55 per hour. Compared to 2018, this yearly salary has grown by 28%.
The largest salary iOS developers can receive is more than $120,000 per year. According to the Indeed report, this is based on two thousand salary reports.

By state, iOS developer salaries vary a bit. The most generous states are California, then Washington, Massachusetts, Virginia, Arizona and New York. Developers working in these states have salaries that exceed the national average.

According to Indeed, two of California’s cities rank as the highest-paid. In San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley, developers can make $161,015 per year, and this is not the highest. iOS developer salary in San Francisco is a bit less at $158,141. Irving, Texas is ranked third, which is worth mentioning as Texas was previously at the bottom of the list of states with the highest iOS developer salary.
Last in this list are iOS developer salaries in Austin and Chicago with $100,216 per year and $84,852 per year respectively, almost two times less than the top-ranked cities.
Even though Apple devices are the most popular in the US, apps for iOS and macOS are developed worldwide. We gathered information about iOS developer salaries in leading IT countries.
This table is based on Glassdoor and Payscale data. We used different sources and merged their data to provide you with a more holistic picture. When these platforms lacked data, we used local job portals stats as more reliable resources. These numbers are marked with an asterisk (*).

Switzerland demonstrates the most superior numbers at $111,925, which exceeds the average iOS developer salary in the US. Denmark is in second place with $76,017 per year.
The last in our chart is India. Average iOS developer salaries in this country don’t reach above $10,000 per year.
Programming languages used for iOS app development are Objective-C and Swift in regards to native development and React Native and Flutter frameworks for cross-platform applications.
According to TIOBE Index for October 2020, based on the amount of search queries in the most popular search engines, Swift and Objective-C are in the top 20 programming languages still in demanded. However, their popularity is decreasing since 2019.
According to the Popularity of Programming Language (PYPL) index from Github, which is created by analyzing how often language tutorials are searched on Google, Swift and Objective-C are in the top 10 trending programming languages. However, their positions slightly decreased compared to previous years. It’s worth mentioning that older Objective-C is ahead of its younger analog.
A few statistics were taken from the February 2020 Stack Overflow developer survey, where 65,000 coders from around the world were interviewed. They talked about which tools they’re using and what they want to harness.
In the list of the most commonly used programming languages, Swift and Objective-С are in the 16th and 20th places respectively. Given that both are niche programming languages tailored to iOS and macOS operating systems, these ranks are high. They may never be more popular than Java, JS, or C++, because these languages have broader application areas.
Swift is in the top 10 programming languages, loved by professional developers. “Loved” on this survey means that the surveyed expert develops using this language and is interested in continuing to code with it.
Swift is also in the top 15 of the most wanted programming languages. This shows that the developer community is interested in learning and harnessing it, and Swift doesn’t have young competitors that can overtake it.
According to Indeed, the average iOS developer salary doesn’t differ from Android developer salary, at least in the US. Such equality demonstrates that both types of expertise is has market demand.
Obvious questions arise: Are developers from the US more qualified than specialists from Eastern Europe, for example? Does their high salary guarantee such high levels of expertise?”
According to a SkillValue report based on over 550 technical assessments, the average salary doesn’t correlate with skill.
